What Self-Driving Companies Should Learn From Drone Remote Operations

Self-driving vehicles have demonstrated impressive performance in structured and low-complexity environments but struggle in uncertain and dynamic situations. Consequently, deployed self-driving systems rely on human oversight through remote operations. This paper argues that remote operations are a safety-critical capability whose design will strongly influence the near-term viability of self-driving vehicle deployments. Drawing on more than 35 years of U.S. military experience with unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) remote operations, this paper synthesizes five lessons directly applicable to self-driving cars: latency constraints, the importance of human-centered workstation design, the challenges of managing operator workload, the need for systematic operator training, and the necessity of robust contingency planning. Military UAV operations demonstrate that failures in any of these areas can lead to catastrophic outcomes. Recent self-driving vehicle incidents are examined through this lens, revealing critical gaps in current industry practices and offering evidence-based guidance for safer, more resilient remote operations.
